What Is WAN and How Does It Work?

WAN, or Wide Area Network, is a vast network of data that isn’t tied to just one location. A WAN is currently the most expansive transport network available and can facilitate the sharing of information, communication, and more between devices in any location through a WAN provider.

As long as a user has access to the established WAN, they will be able to utilize the network to transfer data, share information, and connect and communicate with other users regardless of where they are located.

WAN vs. LAN

The most common type of computer network other than a WAN is a LAN, or Local Area Network.

LANs differ from WANs in that they exist only within a limited geographical area; for example, wireless and ethernet networks. A WAN exists globally and by using a leased network provider and has no ties to geographical locations. A WAN typically employs unique WAN transport protocols such as DWDM, OTN and SONET/SDH.

A LAN can be used as a tool to access a WAN, however, this can only be done within the area of the LANs established infrastructure. Without WAN connections, businesses and other organizations would only be permitted to access specific local areas or geographic regions.

Benefits of WAN Monitoring

WAN monitoring services have a number of robust benefits that help your organization stay on top of your overall network performance and traffic. At NetQuest, we offer comprehensive monitoring that allows you to maintain full visibility where you need it most.

With NetQuest, you can:

  • Automate survey of WAN links for identifying transport protocols and channelization structure
  • Remove WAN transport wrappers and tunneling protocols to access IP packets and steer these packets to Ethernet-based analysis tools
  • Generate unsampled IPFIX metadata generation while preserving key WAN information in the individual flow records
  • Store network discovery information so large fiber installations can be monitored on demand.
  • Gain investment protection via NetQuest’s OMX3200 and its ability to process various network feeds (DWDM, OTN, Ethernet, SDH) and speeds (100G, 10G, etc)

WAN monitoring can also help save your organization significant time and money. Alternative WAN monitoring methods typically require use of standard telecommunications equipment and protocol analyzers not intended for network monitoring applications.
